A Love Letter to a Dear Friend: An Old, Worn Copy
There is a book that sits on my shelf. I see it every day. It is the first print copy ever made of my published words.
It has a cover full of scuffs and scratches. The spine is cracked, its edges worn away into tiger stripes of white. The protective film is beginning to peel back from wear.
It is full of old pages which have been read again, again, again. A dedication, acknowledgements. A story of love and resistance. This is a work of gratitude, connection, and love.
I know its pages by heart. I can recite entire passages and paragraphs from memory. I chose every word with deliberation and care.
I know this work of art in a uniquely intimate way. In a singular way. The way only its creator can.
To my first published story: you have been the greatest joy of my life. You have marked the moment my lifelong dream became a reality. I loved every moment I spent with you—dreaming, outlining, reading.
You have been my teacher. I learned so much through your creation. And I will forever be grateful. You are not perfect, and neither am I. But you are here, and so am I, and we are both alive in this world.
I am so happy that you exist. And even years from now, I will continue to retread the pages of this old, comfortable copy. You are my adventure, my heart, my creativity, my joy.
Thank you for reminding me how amazing, exciting, and fun life can truly be.
